What is Halotherapy?

In essence, Halotherapy involves breathing salty air in specially designed environments to potentially improve respiratory and skin health, as well as enhance overall well-being. However, individual experiences and benefits may vary, and further research is needed to fully establish its efficacy and scope.

It is used as a complementary treatment by inhaling dry salt aerosol in a room that simulates a salt cave environment. This practice, rooted in speleotherapy (cave therapy), utilizes a halo generator to disperse microscopic salt particles into the air. The term "halo" is derived from "halite," the Greek word for salt. By breathing in the fine salt particles, individuals aim to derive various health benefits, particularly for respiratory and skin conditions.

Halotherapy - The Healing Environment

Statistics reveal that respiratory conditions are a significant health burden globally. Asthma alone affects millions, and skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis are increasingly common. Traditional treatments can be effective but often come with side effects. Halotherapy presents an alternative that is natural and non-invasive, potentially supporting the body's own healing processes. When sitting in a halotherapy (salt) room, the microclimate is controlled to optimize the therapeutic effects. The salt in the air is believed to work as a "bronchial brush," clearing mucus and impurities from the lungs and respiratory tract.

Halotherapy - The Salt Microparticles

The halogenerator is the heart of Halotherapy. It grinds pharmaceutical-grade salt into fine submicroscopic particles that can be easily inhaled into the deepest parts of the lungs and absorbed by the skin. The particles have hygroscopic properties, meaning they attract and absorb water, which can help to thin mucus and reduce inflammation. Salt is also known for its natural antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties, which can help cleanse both the respiratory system and the skin.

How is Halotherapy delivered at Scape?

At Scape, we have embraced Halotherapy as part of our wellness services. Why? Because Halotherapy provides a tranquil environment that not only aids in physical well-being but also promotes mental relaxation. The fine submicroscopic particles of salt that we use have optimized salt particle distribution and are the smallest particle size (invisible to the naked eye and therefore requires no cleaning when you leave the Halotherapy room) using proprietary SaltPerfect technology (HaloFX). This allows easy entry of these fine submicroscopic particles of salt to be inhaled into the respiratory system down to the alveoli sacs, the smallest respiration units, at the ends of the respiratory tree.  The salt also lands on the skin where they are believed to also provide therapeutic effects. Moreover, to promote a more relaxing and tranquil environment to our customers, our Halotherapy room is furnished with white cushioned zero gravity loungers.

NOTE: While there is anecdotal evidence supporting the benefits of Halotherapy, scientific studies are ongoing to fully substantiate its effectiveness. As a complementary therapy, Halotherapy should be used alongside conventional medical treatments.

Is Halotherapy Safe?

Halotherapy is widely regarded as safe for the majority of individuals. It is non-invasive, drug-free, and can be a relaxing experience. Those with severe respiratory conditions should seek medical advice before commencing Halotherapy.

Are There Any Precautions to Take When Using Halotherapy?

It is important to follow the guidelines provided by Scape; for instance, wearing protective gear over hair and feet might be advised to maintain the cleanliness of the salt room. People with hyperthyroidism, severe hypertension, and tuberculosis should consult with a healthcare professional before undergoing Halotherapy. Moreover, Halotherapy should be avoided during the acute phase of any illness, including but not limited to the following: cancer, infections accompanied by fever, acute active tuberculosis, coughing up blood, cardiac insufficiency, contagious ailments, use of O2 tank to aid breathing, drug and alcohol intoxification. As with any wellness treatment, if you have health concerns or are pregnant, it's essential to discuss Halotherapy with a healthcare provider.
